This dear family has been friends of ours for ages – since they were a meager family of 5 ;). Christina is actually my hairdresser, so I’m blessed to be able to see them on a regular basis. Sweet little Elly is actually the EIGHTH addition to their family and they were all very eager to meet her. She must have sensed their eagerness because she surprised them all by arriving 5 weeks early! So even though I don’t typically shoot newborn sessions past 2 or 3 weeks old, because of all the intricacies that go along with being a premie we didn’t do Elly’s until the day before her due date. She was still small and sleepy enough to be squishy and newborn-y though, so we were able to do most of the traditional poses I try to incorporate into a newborn session, which made me happy
Let me tell you, this was the most smiley baby I have ever seen, let alone photographed, and I was almost giddy with delight at all her sweet grins! If this session was any indication, she’s going to be one happy and contented little girl and will fit in splendidly with her 7 brothers and sisters.
Doesn’t that face just make you grin from ear to ear?! This little blessing was planned for long before she was ever conceived, with even her name known to Mama months before she came to be. Shane and Christina thought that their family was complete after 6 children, but every time they tried to “finalize” it they felt God telling them that there were more children to be added to their amazing family, and it really was like they knew who these children were to be. I remember Christina telling me at one of my appointments, shortly after her 7th was born, that there was still a Jessica to be joining their ranks. Lo and behold, several months later I got the news that they were expecting this precious bundle to complete their family (at least we think it’s complete now, right?!). And even after 8, the love that these parents have for their children just keeps growing and growing.
The circumstances surrounding Elly’s birth are bittersweet. The birth of a baby is always miraculous and monumental, but just days before Jessica (Elly) was born her mama lost her best friend suddenly. I cannot even begin to image the grief that Christina was going through at what is supposed to be such a joyous time. Elouise was Christina’s rock, and they often got together to provide support to each other and go over homeschooling plans. To find out one day that she had a blood clot and the next that she was gone is simply beyond comprehension. She left behind a husband and 3 children, which weighed heavily on Christina while she birthed a child of her own. But through it all God was gracious. Elly stabilized enough to allow Christina to attend the funeral, and she grew strong enough to be able to be discharged just before Christmas so their family could be together to celebrate.
I really feel so blessed to be able to know this family and count them as friends. They have such pure hearts and are so generous to all those around them. It was an honour to be able to photograph the final chapter to their story.
